The Unicorn: A Meditation

The Unicorn does not exist in celtic mythology: the nearest would be the Pooka and this is a more complex entity entirely. However I hope poetic licence will be granted to allow for it's inclusion here, and that you will take it to represent the fantasy and Faery creatures that are common to all cultures.

Across the Plains, and forest paths there is no end to this mysterious spirit; unicorn, the bearer of the sacred mystery. The traveler is lucky indeed to catch a glimpse of this most beautiful messenger of the gods, and its appearance foretells an important new era in someone’s life and a great spiritual awakening.
Those who encounter the Unicorn, are overcome by feelings of love and awe. Trembling in every limb and assailed in every sense, it’s mere presence is reward for the turbulence and effort of the journey. The Unicorn should not be overtly sought – it is not prey nor prize – but it is the symbol of the things we do seek; understanding, enlightenment, spirituality, belief, oneness with the world and with the divine.

I am the One and Both, the strange and mundane
I am the gift and the duty
I am the only one amoung many
I am the whole and part of the whole
I am free and constrained at once
I am that which you will follow
and I am that which seeks out you
I am the Unicorn

Prayers of Cliona of the Ninth Wave

FLOW AND EBB

Flow and ebb, Flow and ebb,
the life she gives, the peace she brings
the fear she takes, the marks she cleans
flow and ebb, flow and ebb

CARRIED ON THE WIND

The sound of waves like heartbeats strong
call me to worship at her shrine
and as I smell the salted wind
I hear her wisdom outlive time
carried on the wind
carried on the wind
Cliona of the ninth blessed wave
hidden siren of the sea
calling to us across time
strong and proud, strong and free
carried on the wind
carried on the wind

Prayer to the Goddess of Nature

As we move through the world, it is easy to forget that we share it, in all its glory, with other living things and that this world is theirs as much as ours. Every thing that gives us pleasure in nature, from the turn of a leaf at Autumn to the rainbow contained in every droplet of dew on a leaf, is divine. The immense strength and force of Nature, the lion springing and the storm that rages, find an echo within our own natures.

Prayer to the Goddess of Nature

In the sun that warms me
In the wind upon my cheek
in the spring and the well
I find Her, and She is wonderful to behold

In the bird song at dawn
In the howl of the lone wolf
In the curlews cry across the plains
I find Her, and She is wonderful to behold

In the rose and the lilac
In the wild garlic of the wood
In cut grass and evening scent
I find Her, and She is wonderful to behold

In the bitterweet of late apples
In the frocken and the berry
In the crop and in the windfall
I find Her, and She is wonderful to behold
